letters to my daughters: april | raleigh child and family photographer

The more that you read,
the more things you will know.
The more you learn,
the more places you’ll go!
~ Dr. Seuss

My darling Macy,

My bookworm.

Since you learned to read, you have devoured books upon books! We visit the library every week to keep you stocked in your favorite chapter books, and you are pretty particular about what you like, with Rainbow Magic Fairies and American Girls topping the list.

I love that you love reading. I’m a well-read bookworm from way back, and I too have stacks and stacks of books standing by. I truly believe in the value of getting lost in a good book, and I treasure the fact that your world is ever-expanding between the pages of a well-worn paperback. As long as you have a book in hand, you’ll never be bored, and you will be transported to places that exist all around the globe and even places that only exist in our imaginations.

(And since you are my wild child, always moving and always loud, I have to admit it can be kind of nice to enjoy a little quiet when you’ve gotten lost in your books.)

My sweet girl, I hope that you always have stacks of books by your side, and I hope you always make time to read, no matter how crazy life gets. It’s such a gift.

I love you always.

xoxo,
Mommy

happy happy happy | candid outdoor family photography raleigh nc

Cameron is one of the happiest little boys I think I’ve ever met! (With an early childhood education degree, I’ve worked with babies, toddlers, and preschoolers for many moons, so that is really saying something!) We met up on an early spring morning in Raleigh, and he was such a joy. As I look back over these photos, I can just picture him pretending to play football and chanting “Let’s go, Duke, let’s go!” Cutest thing ever!

Cameron’s mom contacted me to get some candid family photos of their fun little guy, and she worried that he was so active that we wouldn’t be able to pin him down. I have lots of experience photographing two-year olds, and Cameron was one of the easiest I’ve had! Sure, he was energetic and zooming all around the field, but he was so full of life and loved hugging on his mom and dad for the few moments we asked him to.

Toddlers can of course be a challenge, because they are testing the limits and asserting a little independence. That’s their job! I’ve found that taking some time to connect with them, giving them space to explore, and making everything a game really helps to capture some priceless moments that a family will cherish forever.

Just looking at Cameron’s giant grin in these family photos instantly pops Pharrell’s song “Happy” into my head…”Clap along if you know what happiness is to you…Because I’m happy…Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do…” (And now it’s in your head too. Enjoy! Haha!)

Waiting | Maternity Photography Raleigh NC

Towards the end of pregnancy, all you can do is wait and dream. Who will he look like? How will his laugh sound? What will he be when he grows up? And of course…when will he arrive?

studio inspiration – furnishings | wake forest photography studio

Things are humming right along at the studio these days! Last time I peeked, the walls had been painted, bathroom tile was laid, and cabinets were about to go up! I’m guessing plumbing and light fixtures are next, along with countertops and carpet! (I’m not too thrilled with having carpet, but unfortunately nicer floors were out of my budget for right now. That’s okay, we’ll be saving for them as we go!)

Every time I visit, I am reminded of why I fell in love with the space. It can be difficult to envision your dream photography studio when you’re staring at studs and subfloor, but luckily I have a background in selling new construction homes so I’ve been down that road many times. The windows in this space are beautiful! Large and arched at the top, with beautiful molding. The shooting room gets the best light at all times of the day, which thrills me. And even the family room (which is what I’m calling the little reception area) is going to be light and bright.

I’m working hard to create a space where my clients will feel at home. Most studio photo sessions will center around newborns, maternity, and babies up to one year. So it’s important to me to have comfortable seating for tired moms and dads, a cozy changing table for the little bubs, soft music playing to help moms and dads relax, and magazines and wifi to pass the time while I’m busy photographing their precious cargo.

At the same time, I want the space to reflect the Be True brand. Soft, feminine, with natural and organic touches, such as lots of green plants for fresh, clean air. Homey and cozy, warm yet modern. I seriously cannot wait to show you the space when it’s complete!

For now, I thought I’d share another inspiration board, similar to the one I shared a couple of weeks ago. This one is a little more concrete, with furniture, colors, and textures that will be used in the studio. I’ve found items from all over the place, from Target and Macy’s to Joss & Main, and even my favorite local antique shop and craigslist!

Some of these things are the actual items I’ve purchased, such as the sofa, desk, and rug. Others, like the rocking chair and armoire, are more representative, since they were craigslist finds. I’d love to photograph them for you, but they are currently buried in my garage along with piles and piles of other things slated to go on move-in day!

As we get a little closer, my assistant Katelyn and I are beginning to plan a little gathering to celebrate the grand opening! Save the date for May 31st, I’d love to show you around in person! (Plus, there will be food, goody bags, and prizes! Where else will you find all of that?)
